WASHINGTON (AP) -- Oklahoma ranks near the bottom of the 50 states in average income.

The US Census Bureau says Oklahomans median household income is $35,634, better than only six other states.

Median income means half the wage earners are below, and half are above the amount.

The highest incomes are in states along the East Coast with Connecticut at the top of the list at nearly $56,000 a year.

States in the South, West and Appalachia are at the bottom with Mississippi the lowest with median incomes just above $32,000 a year.

The national median income is just over $43,300 a year.

The rankings are based on 2003 Census figures, the latest available.
