Maybe your grandparents used to tell you stories about walking miles to school, up hill, both ways in the snow.

Well, actually its good exercise for kids and it can save parents on gas. But before kids make the trek, parents need to make sure the way is safe. That's the focus of the International Walk to School Day.

Kids all across the country were encouraged to find a safe way to walk to school. Some kids have to walk in ditches, through water and even on streets to get to school. Organizers hope events like this one will make parents aware of potential problems.

Mary Beth Ogle with the Tulsa Safe Kids Coalition: "Today brings information and education, not only to the families and the parents, but it also tells us that children need an environment that it is safe to walk to walk to school."

The Safe Kids Coalition put Broken Arrow's Liberty Elementary in the spotlight Wednesday because several parents and staff members are concerned about the risks students face walking to school each day.
