EDMOND, Okla. (AP) -- A team of 11 city employees from Edmond is in Texas helping with rescue efforts in the coastal areas hit by Hurricane Rita.
The team of six firefighters, four police officers and a public works employee left Friday for the storm-battered region.
The group is helping at the request of the Port Arthur, Texas, Fire Department.
Edmond Fire Captain Greg Westermier says police officers were involved because the rescue teams after Hurricane Katrina were threatened by civilians during rescue efforts.
Edmond Police Sergeant Rex DeMoss says while in Texas, the Edmond officers will have the same law enforcement authority they have in Edmond.
