A Good Samaritan's murder inspires a Broken Arrow church. Andre Clayton was gunned down, trying to help a man off the ground.
News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson explains how the church is trying to impact the next generation of Clayton's family. Andre Clayton's family all called him "Dre". They say "Dre" was the kind of person who would stop to change your flat tire on the side of the road, or help old folks put up their Christmas lights.
He was only 26 when he was shot in a parking lot in the 5000 block of North Peoria. Witnesses say Dre was helping unload supplies at this smoke shop when he saw a man fall to the ground. When Dre went to help him up, witnesses say the man shot Dre three times in the chest.
Witnesses all pointed the finger at Michael Brown Junior, who had been out of jail for less than a year after being convicted of shooting with intent to kill.
Dre Clayton was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving a 5-year-old daughter at home. The story touched the congregation at First Presbyterian Church in Broken Arrow. Dre's family is not a member of the church, but they wanted to do something for his daughter Ameshia.
Rev. Michael Barron: "At least to high school, possibly to college. We'd like to see her - I know her grandmother is a chemist - and we want her to have those opportunities.â€
Dre’s mother Melrita Gilliam: "When one door closes, another door opens. And they've opened a whole 'nother door for Ameshia that her daddy's life being taken was closed."
The church has set up the "Ameshia Clayton" trust fund through Arvest Bank.
Meanwhile, the shooting suspect - Michael Brown - is in the Tulsa County jail, charged with first-degree murder.
