OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Business and education leaders believe tougher graduation requirements will produce a more skilled work force and improve the state's economy.

The new requirements were outlined Tuesday at the annual State of the Schools luncheon in Oklahoma City.

Matt Gandal of Achieve Incorporated, a nonprofit organization promoting preparation for higher education, says the new graduation requirements will make Oklahoma high school diplomas worth more in the long run.

Beginning with the class of 2013, all Oklahoma high school graduates must pass certain end-of-instruction tests or they will not receive diplomas.

Oklahoma City School Board Chairman Cliff Hudson says raising the bar is critical for student achievement.
