Something good is "growing" in north Tulsa. It’s one woman's work to build a community farm that grows fresh food that's good for you.
News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says Denelda Newsome's community farm started small two years ago. Now, it seems to be growing every day.
The garden on 56th Streen North near Lewis is the one that started it all. It's now just one of four growing on the northside. Newsome now has one at a church, another at a charity, and a handicapped-accessible garden for the elderly.
On Saturdays during the summer, the mother-garden hosts a farmer's market, the only farmer's market in state actually held on a farm. The state Department of Agriculture is sponsoring the site as a demonstration garden, as Newsome experiments with the new technique of growing plants beneath plastic.
It takes little hands and a lot of work to keep the garden growing. “And the whole idea is to get the community to understand where their food and fiber comes from and it all starts with agriculture on a farm somewhere."
Newsome says the chief export of her farm is health education, and she's ready to expand her program to a local elementary school.
