Ottawa County Sheriff Dennis King resigned Thursday under pressure, and hours later he collapsed while taking a walk. King is said to be in serious condition at a hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office made headlines over an incident outside of a state facility in Vinita. Sheriff’s deputies handcuffed a mentally ill woman to a gate. They say the hospital wouldn't admit her, despite a court order.
Deputies say she was never alone and was only there until a guard found a key to unlock the handcuffs.
The sheriff's office faces scores of complaints and a federal investigation.
