INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) -- A 16-year-old girl who concocted a dramatic story about being kidnapped from outside her home in Independence last month was charged Friday with falsely reporting a crime and obstruction.
The Montgomery County Attorney's office says Kelsey Stelting was charged with one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime and three felony counts of obstructing official duty.
On April 11th Stelting told police that she had been abducted at gunpoint from her family's driveway and forced into a white van. When she reappeared in town more than 16 hours later, she told of escaping her assailant after hitting him with a glass.
But two days after she reported being abducted, police and the FBI said she admitted her story was a hoax and that she had actually spent the time alone in the country.
