Dreams do come true. A non-profit group, Home Depot and a couple of hundred volunteers are making it happen for the kids at Tulsa's Northside YWCA.
The kids put their playground dreams on paper back in February and as News on 6 reporter Rick Wells found out, an army of volunteers turned it into real life Thursday.
Every kid needs a safe place to play and there is a small army of volunteers making that happen for the hundreds of kids at the Northside YWCA.
George Curry is with the 91st and Delaware Home Depot. He's one of the build captains or supervisors.
Curry says, "My job is the surface inside here, other captains are in charge of assembly of pieces, others are incharge of building borders around the edge, or putting down the pavestone. Each captain has his own project."
Mulch people on George Curry's team lay down a safe, soft surface.
It's Jennifer DeMelo's project. She's with KaBoom - a national non-profit organization, they have partnered with Home Depot to build or refurbish 1,000 playgrounds in a 1,000 days.
Back in February, the kids here put their playgound dreams on paper.
"Everything we could do to get them what their dreams were, we've done that's in our power," says DeMelo.
The kids wanted trees. They've planted trees.
Some wanted trains. They're building a sandbox train.
The kids wanted rainbows. They're painting one in a mural on the wall.
DeMelo says, "When people come together and work as a community, we build things."
When they're done, there's a ceremonial board cutting to celebrate completion.
A day well spent making dreams come true.
The concrete poured to anchor the big playgoround pieces has to properly set, so the kids can start playing on it Monday.
