The City of Bixby has a $20-million bond issue on the ballot Tuesday. The bulk of it is for streets, and if all the items pass - both property and sales taxes would go up.

News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan says there are plenty of narrow and busy streets in Bixby, that are overdue for expansion.

Two of the busiest 2-lane roads - 151st from Memorial to Riverview and from Riverview to 161st - would be updated if the bond issue passes. The plans call for major improvements at 121st and Riverview, and 131st and Memorial. In all, that's $12.2-million. Bond supporter Sean Kouplen: "And we have one new street we're creating, Armstrong Street, will be extended from our downtown, from 151st to 148th which we think will help revitalize downtown."

And another part of the bond issue, $6-million, would pay for improvements at Bentley Park, including new athletic fields and a playground. Adding to the park is the second largest item on the ballot. The master plans call for a splash pad and connections to downtown and another nearby park.

And the city of Bixby wants to build a new fire station near 121st and Memorial to improve service for an area that's growing. The supporters of the bond issue say the items would increase property taxes by about $10 a month on a $100,000 home.

The two sales tax items, for beautification and to relieve property taxes, would add a half cent sales tax, but cut property taxes by $2 a month. Sean Kouplen: "This bond issue addresses a lot of wishes and concerns of the citizens of Bixby."

The polls in Bixby are open 7 AM to 7 PM.
