OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Some Oklahoma City high school students joined Hispanic leaders and others in a rally Friday morning over proposed changes in state and federal immigration laws.
The group carried flags and signs asking motorists to honk in support of the rally in southwest Oklahoma City.
About three dozen students gathered at Chelino's Mexican Restaurant during the lunch hour to express their concerns over proposed changes.
School spokesman Cordell Jordan says most of the students were checked out of class by their parents, but a few at nearby Capitol Hill High School walked out without permission. He says most of those students returned shortly after leaving and won't be disciplined.
Hispanic leaders in the community and school officials have encouraged students at Capitol Hill, Southeast and US Grant not to walk out of class but to attend another rally planned for noon Saturday at the state Capitol.
