OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A bill named after a 2-year-old toddler who died of child abuse is approved in the state Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill would establish stronger review procedures and allow greater input by those acting as advocates for a child's health, safety and welfare. It would allow judges and the Department of Human Services to request a state crime bureau investigation.
State Senate author Harry Coates says he will review proposed changes by the District Attorney's Council, but wouldn't accept any changes that weaken the bill's protections in child abuse cases.
The measure is named for Kelsey Smith-Briggs, who died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen on October 11th while her care was being monitored by child welfare workers.
The girl's stepfather, Michael Lee Porter, is charged with first-degree murder in her death.
