Treasurer Charged In Drug Case

Washington County Treasurer Stan Stevens was officially charged on Monday with possessing a dangerous controlled substance with the intent to distribute. News On 6 anchor Terry Hood reports his arrest Friday night was the second drug arrest of the day for his family.

Stan Stevens was arrested inside the Bartlesville home of the secretary for the Washington County Board of Commissioners. The investigation began here in mid-December when the woman's husband committed suicide. Jerry Hastings has lived in the neighborhood going on four decades. He says the couple rarely spoke to neighbors.

"I know they didn't get along too well. They got in fights and argued a lot out in the driveway," said neighbor Jerry Hastings.

Court documents show Stan Stevens was at the home Friday night and paid a police informant $250 for 50 tablets of the prescription pain killer Lortab. Investigators found the pills hidden in the garage. They also found a pipe made from aluminum foil containing a dark residue, along with cigarette rolling papers in Stevens' truck which was parked in the driveway.

Stevens arrest happened less than 16 hours after his son, Grant, was arrested on drug charges in Bartlesville, as well. Court records show the 18 year old was spotted at Southside Park by police early in the morning and admitted leaving cocaine and $100 in a metal box at the park.

"It was just a complete and total shock to me and our family," said Washington County Commissioner Mike Dunlap.

Stan Stevens has been the Washington County Treasurer for 20 years. He was just elected to a new four-year term last summer. Washington County Commissioner Mike Dunlap says an audit of the treasurer's office will start on Tuesday, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

"We're working with the D.A., we're aware of what is going on. We will oversee. We will keep an eye on the Treasurer's Office. And, we'll do what we can to restore the confidence of the voters of Washington County," said Washington County Commissioner Mike Dunlap.

Investigators say the two arrests are not connected, but they do expect more arrests to come from the Stan Stevens' case.

Since Stan Stevens is an elected official he can only be removed from office by the governor, but conditions of his bond do not allow him to enter the county administration building.

Both father and son will make their next court appearance on the same day next month.
