A Green Country couple is dead after fire destroys their rural Osage County home. It happened early Wednesday morning just outside of Hominy. The News On 6's Chris Wright reports 58-year-old Steven Tyler and his wife, 54-year-old Roxanna, are described as prominent members of the Hominy community. Fire officials say the timing of their loss couldn't be more tragic.
"It's a real tragedy. Not something you ever want to respond to, especially in a small town where everyone knows everyone. But, we'll do the best we can," said Hominy Fire Chief Steve Pitts.
By the time Chief Pitts and his men arrived at the Tylers' home, he says it was already too late. The couple lived in a rural area of south Hominy. Family members say they owned the home for decades. But, because of its secluded location, the blaze was not spotted by a neighbor until 1 o'clock in the morning.
"By the time anyone noticed the fire, it was fully involved. Upon our arrival, it was fully involved," said Hominy Fire Chief Steve Pitts.
Steven Tyler owned a business in Hominy. He and his wife are survived by six children. Officials say in this small town, the Tylers are a big deal.
"They were all real well known. It's a small town. It's pretty closely knit, so they're well known," said Hominy Fire Chief Steve Pitts.
Firefighters say the Tylers were found in their bed, killed by smoke inhalation, only hours after they had finished celebrating Christmas. Pitts says it's a holiday fire he will never forget.
"I can't think of anything worse that could have happened. Especially this time of year, it's definitely a tragic time," said Hominy Fire Chief Steve Pitts.
The state fire marshal's office was on scene this Wednesday to assist with the investigation. Officials say they are not sure yet what caused the fire.
