The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a murder-suicide in Dewey. Dewey Police said this investigation marks the first homicide in the city in about two years.
When Dewey Police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office served a protective order Thursday to evict Tyler Gage from a home near 12th and North Choctaw, they said he left right away.
But the OSBI said Gage, who was married to the woman who lives there, came back with a gun. Lisa Sanchez lives down the street and said she heard three gunshots around 11:00 Thursday night.
"When we get out and run outside, that's the first thing I saw, the girl screaming and crying,” Sanchez said.
The OSBI said Gage forced his way into the home and shot Christopher Gilliam.
Neighbors said Gilliam, who died at the scene, was the woman's ex. Investigators said they could not confirm that information. Sanchez and her husband Roger Baeza said they went over to help and saw the scene up close.
"Whatever happened there last night was bad because there was a bunch of kids around and one of them saw everything and it's not fair for the kids,” Baeza said.
"I’m a really tough person but when I saw that I'm like wow, [I’ve] never seen that much blood on the floor,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez said her motherly instincts kicked in and she did what she could to help the four children inside the home. The OSBI said none of the children were hurt, and neither was the woman.
"I asked one of the officers, I said, ‘Can I take the kids home?’ I said, ‘’Cause I think this is not a good idea for the kids, you know, being here,’" Sanchez recalled.
The OSBI said after Gage shot Gilliam, Gage turned the gun on himself and died hours later at the hospital. The Dewey Police Chief said this is just the third homicide the city has seen in the past decade.
