A metro family is using a 3D printer to provide some much-needed comfort to staff at OU Medical Center.
So far, they’ve printed off about 250 “ear-savers,” and are calling on others to help.
The plastic-like device prevents uncomfortable friction from face masks.
In the fight against COVID-19, masks must be worn every day, and all-day long.
“There are things we can do as regular citizens that can help us overcome this pandemic,” said Cole Davis, who makes the masks. “I have not been counting. I have just been printing them as fast as I can.”
Davis said after he saw a link shared on Facebook, he dusted off his 3D printer to help his mom, Mitsy who works at OU Children’s.
Without protective equipment, those in and at the hospital are at a higher risk for contracting the virus.
The mother and son duo thought to themselves, here’s a way to give back during the pandemic.
“I have got staff that work at the children’s hospital, and also at the adult hospital. I took his prototype in, and also in my outpatient area,” said Mitsy Martin-Davis. “When I brought them in, this morning and said…’Hey, guys I have got these ear-savers if you want to try them out.’”
What would at sometimes be considered a luxury, is now a Godsend.
Nurses began singing their praises, and are motivated by the messages spelled out for all to see.
The family quickly heard back from nurses who said, “These are great! I love the motivational sayings. Thank you so much! I appreciate you! This is a life-saver.”
All of the workers are now covered at OU Medical Center.
But, the family wants to grow the program beyond their hospital, so they called in the troops.
“I have also asked the boy scouts, of local troop 30 who I happened to know, that have 3D printers and they have agreed to help us out,” said Cole.
Because when we are all social distant from one another—this is a way our state can still come together.
“It’s so much bigger than me, and my mother and my 3D printer,” he said. “It can be so much more powerful than just a toy.”
