As Oklahomans continue to show their support for healthcare workers, University of Oklahoma football coaches took their turn on Saturday.

OU football coaches hopped in their cars and launched on a parade for nurses, doctors and other staff members who have worked long hours during the fight against COVID-19.

“It means a lot, especially on a holiday weekend when all of our healers are away from their families,” Norman Regional Health System Chief Nursing Officer Brittni McGill said. “They’re here caring for their work families and their patients.”

The entire OU coaching staff, who were joined by their families, wanted healthcare workers to know they have their backs.

“It means a lot,” Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley said. “Hopefully, it means a lot to them.”

The parade began at Norman Regional Porter Avenue campus and made their way to HealthPlex at I-35 and Tecumseh Road.

“The community support has been tremendous and we can feel it,” McGill said. “You can feel it in the air. Through moments of anxiety and uncertainty, some people are feeling a little unsettled. It gives us hope and it gives us strength.”

With OU spring football halted due to the virus, coaches said they want to use the time they have to help spread positivity.

“These people putting their lives on the line they’re being away from their families to take care if all of us, so it’s just a small way we can show our gratitude,” Riley said.
