A local fire chief said he and his entire staff of volunteer firefighters have resigned from their positions.

The announcement was made on the Langston City Fire Department Facebook page Wednesday by the now former chief, Rob Davis.

“We didn’t resign because of legal issues but it was all city and county politics and we just got fed up with it,” said Davis. “That’s what I will tell you, I don’t really have much to go into.”

Davis notified upper channels, like Logan County Emergency Management, via a mass text message Wednesday morning.

Fire coverage became the first concern.

“You have others out of town that will come in and handle the calls,” said Davis. “Just like 911 dispatch will happen, they’ll get dispatch to respond to the emergency.”

The news came as a surprise, especially to members of the Langston City Council.

“Whoever posted it, posted incorrectly and did not get that information from the city council,” said Town Trustee Linda Williams.

City officials said Davis initially was resigning at the end of the month and suddenly made the decision Wednesday to resign.

The fire department is still intact and functional, city officials said, with an interim fire chief now named.

Clinton Winfrey will now serve has interim fire chief, effective immediately.

“The only resignation we have received is his resignation, we have not received one resignation (from other firefighters),” said Williams. “He needs to stay off of that (Facebook), whoever is posting that is lying. He’s lying.”

City leaders will meet Thursday to discuss what’s next.

There is a lot to talk about.

“I do feel bad, I never wanted it to come to this, nobody does,” said Davis. “For a whole department to resign with their chief. You know. It’s heartbreaking.”

News 9 reached out to several volunteer Langston firefighters. None have called back.

Williams tells News 9 she is unclear of how many firefighters volunteer at the department.
