TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating what happened on I-244 after a truck drove through a crowd of protesters Sunday.
OHP said it has three divisions investigating what happened, including Troop B in Tulsa, Troop Z, the investigations division, as well as the Traffic Homicide Unit.
News On 6 was providing live coverage as protesters took over I-244, blocking the interstate. Our Osage Casino Skycam Network showed a pickup truck and trailer moving forward in the crowd.
Video sent to News On 6 from a viewer shows the scene on the ground, which shows people throwing things at the truck and trying to rip off the drivers' side rear view mirror.
The video also shows what appears to be some kind of gas thrown into the air right next to the trailer, and someone using a rod to hit the truck several times.
EMSA responded to two injuries, including a man who witnesses said fell off a bridge while trying to save a young girl.
EMSA said it cannot release the conditions of those people because it "could be connected to the commission of a crime," so EMSA is deferring to law enforcement for any injury updates. OHP did not release any information on the conditions of the two people hurt.
Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin expressed Monday that TPD was surprised the crowd moved on to the interstate.
"We did not know the direction of some of the crowd. Again, the crowd in which was there to peacefully protest, they went to Reconciliation Park. And that is the direction they were supposed to go. We didn't know that there was going to be a group of individuals that spun off of that and take to the highway. The highway could not get shut down quick enough for that to take place,” Franklin said.
OHP addressed the issue of people believing troopers let the truck driver go. Troopers said they knew where the driver was at all times, and for the safety of everyone involved, they said they met with him at another location.
