Eskimo Joe's wants to hear from you after someone created an online petition demanding a name and mascot change.
The company has now set up a special section on its website for public input.
"We have enjoyed serving the Stillwater community (and beyond) for the last 45 years. Everything we've done is steeped in the tradition of unbeatable customer service," Eskimo Joe’s said in a social media post. “We're hearing a lot of chatter online regarding our brand and image and we encourage you all to keep sharing your opinions with us."
On Monday an online petition began circulating calling Eskimo Joe's and Mexico Joe's racially insensitive.
It said minorities should not be used as caricatures or mascots and claims the depictions parallel the racist ads, mascots, and cartoons of Native Americans, Asians and Africans. It also calls the word Eskimo a racial slur.
As of Wednesday morning, that petition had a little more than 1,800 signatures.
Thousands of people have come out saying they want Eskimo Joe’s keeping its name and brand. Several counter-petitions have been created in support of the company. Together those had more than 30,000 signatures Wednesday morning.
Eskimo Joe's said it’s taking all views into consideration and evaluating the best path forward for the company.
