Owasso police have a warning for people about leaving their garage doors open and cars unlocked at night.

Owasso Police said while they don't necessarily see the violent crime that happens in Tulsa, they do constantly deal with theft.

They say this happens in spurts throughout the year and often officers see spikes in the summer months.

Police say they've noticed a lot of open garage doors during their night patrols over the last two weeks.

They say that along with car doors being left unlocked, add up to an easy target for thieves.

To combat this, Owasso Police encourage people to follow what they call "The 9 p.m. Routine."

Lt. Nick Boatman says "So, at 9 p.m. if everyone will just take a round trip around the house make sure all the windows and doors are locked up, make sure you've got your garage door closed and check your cars as well. Also, make sure your security systems are on and activated and working properly. It's just one of those things everyone can do to help make a difference."

Owasso Police also say to stay alert and call them when something seems out of the ordinary.
