The money raised at Sunday’s tournament at the Sapulpa Golf Course will go toward medical bills for 17-year-old Cade Wegener. Wegener has dealt with cancer three times.
Wegener’s father and mother, Chris and April, said Saturday would have been exactly five years since Cade began his journey battling cancer.
The sarcoma, a type of cancer formed from connective tissue, was located near his spine.
Wegener was scheduled to have surgery in Jan. 2016. However, in Summer 2017, Chris said doctors found a new tumor in Cade’s right hip.
In order to protect his nerves, radiation therapy was performed instead of surgery.
“There was still a chance with the radiation and that’s why he is in a wheelchair because it damaged some nerves,” Chris Wegener said.
Chris Wegener said his son was four months away from being three years cancer-free. Unfortunately, doctors found another tumor near Cade’s right hip back in August.
The fundraiser cost $75 per golfer and $200 at each hole for a business sponsor at the tournament.
“I love golf,” Cade Wegener said. “It’s really my favorite.”
Family friend John Christner came out to donate and help put a smile on Cade’s face.
“When I heard his story, it was a no-brainer for us to get involved,” Christner said.
“They will tell you they love us, but everyone loves Cade,” Chris Wegener said.
Cade will have a MRI scan in two weeks. If the scan indicates Cade’s cancer is shrinking, his father said doctors will do another two rounds of chemotherapy at Saint Francis Children’s Hospital in Tulsa.
