Pawnee County voters have elected a new sheriff. Darrin Varnell edged out current sheriff Mike Waters.
Sheriff-elect Darrin Varnell campaigned on "building a better brand of law enforcement" in Pawnee County and promised accountability and transparency.
59-percent of voters supported his plan, electing Varnell as Pawnee County's next sheriff.
On Facebook early Wednesday morning, Varnell thanked his family, campaign team, supporters and voters.
“Wow, what a night! I’m just getting into bed and I wanted to thank everyone again,” said Varnell. “I’m humbled by all the texts, Facebook messages, e-mails, and phone calls. Thank you all.”
He also had a message for his opponent.
“I want to thank Mike Waters for his service to Pawnee County and wish him the best of luck,” Varnell said.
Waters has served Pawnee County as sheriff for the past 10 years.
Waters shared a statement on Facebook just before 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
“It is with heavy heart that I announce that I have lost the Election. I want to thank everyone that has helped me work on my campaign,” said Waters. “I congratulate Sheriff Elect Varnell on his job well done and may he serve the people of Pawnee County with the vigilance and ethics that they deserve.”
Waters said it's been a pleasure, honor and to serve as Sheriff and shared a messaged with his staff.
"I am sorry that I let you down. I know that is a small condolence, I know it does not mean much when you have to feed your family and have the uncertainty of the time ahead. I know that God has a plan. He has a plan for me and I will trust in Him."
Waters will serve as Sheriff until January 3, then Varnell will take over.
