A Green Country woman is passing along life lessons from her mom to women in Tulsa overcoming homelessness.
"You have a purpose, until your very last breath," said Lisa Bain, founder of Joy In the Cause.
There are more than a dozen women in this room at John 3:16. Every one of them is laser-focused on the speaker. They are there for a purpose and fully engaged in the conversation.
"Did you know that the root of joy is gratefulness? It is not the other way around," said Bain.
Each one of these women are sitting at the edge of their old life and on the cusp of a new one.
"No one choses to be homeless- life sometimes happens and you can't get a grasp on it and one week turns into a month, turns into 6 months, turns into a year because you just don't know what to do," said Misty Robinson, who is in a John 3:16 program for women overcoming homelessness.
Some of these women have visions of what they want that new life to look like, some are still trying to figure out how to make that new life happen. Then there are people like Robinson.
"I was homeless for 20 months," said Robinson.
She is in constant awe of the woman she is now, compared to the one that walked through the doors of John 3:16 in July.
"Every day I wake up and I get to have another day to take advantage of another opportunity this place offers me to reclaim my life," said Robinson.
Once a month, John 3:16 has a speaker come and share a lesson with the women in their programs. Friday’s speaker is Bain.
"I am actually the Founder of Joy in the Cause- a local non-profit that helps people with life altering illness and those with special needs in crisis situations," said Bain.
She is sharing the lessons her joyful, fiery, mom shared with her in the last years of her life. Lessons she hopes will inspire these women to keep looking for the light.
“Truly, no matter how dark it is there really is treasure, treasure in the darkest place," said Bain.
"If you don't see any possibility of getting out from where you are at, you are never going to make a move. These stories help us plant the seeds of possibility," said Megan Thomson.
Bain passed out bracelets with charms, each one representing lessons from her mom, lessons she passed on to the women at John 3:16.
