The first senate bill filed in Oklahoma’s 2021 session has been named after fallen Tulsa Police Sergeant Craig Johnson.

If passed, the bill would strengthen Oklahoma’s laws on scrap metal theft.

Johnson was shot and killed during a traffic stop in June. His partner, Officer Aurash Zarkeshan was seriously injured but survived.

Before he died, Johnson had helped lawmakers develop the bill’s language. It was supposed to be voted on earlier this year but was delayed due to the pandemic.

The new session will begin on February 1.
