Tulsa Public Schools Creates New Programs For ESL Students

With COVID-19 changing the amount of in-person class time, Tulsa Public schools has created new programs to help the high number of students and parents who have English as their second language.

The school district has pushed for more bilingual staff hires, a direct interpretation line that connects to all TPS departments, and a texting platform available in 72 languages with Spanish being the largest need. Schools such as East Central High School and Nathan Hale High school are just two of 16 TPS sites with a majority Hispanic student body. Dr. Laura Grisso the Executive Director of Language and Cultural Services for Tulsa Public Schools says these programs have not only helped parents keep their kids up to speed but also give them a new sense of relief.

"That really empowers the parents to not just receive the interpretation services but to say I need to find answers for my child and I'm going to go out and seek them," said Dr. Grisso.
