Thousands of people could lose their job, including some in Green Country, as American Airlines announced plans to furlough employees.

Company officials said, 13,000 employees may be furloughed by April and some of the furlough notices will start going out on Friday.

The airline industry got billions of dollars from the COVID relief packages to keep employees on the payroll, but that agreement expires on April 1.

American's CEO said in a letter to employees that the company thought they would be flying all of its planes by summer, but currently, that is not happening.

American was forced to furlough 19,000 employees last October due to the pandemic. The company has around 4,500 employees in Tulsa and 180 lost their job in October.

Currently, there is no word on if Tulsa workers will be impacted by the furloughs
