Freezing drizzle is still falling in Muskogee where road crews are preparing to work overnight to fight slick spots.
It’s a team effort by the Shawnee Bypass, as both ODOT and City of Muskogee crews keep the roads clear. Muskogee's Assistant Director of Public Works Stephen Morton has multiple salt brine sprayers ready to be out all night.
"Major intersections, bridges, hilly areas, things of that nature. With everything that is on the ground, with temperatures expected to drop, we do expect it to freeze and we're ready for that," Morton said.
He said he has additional trucks on standby if things get worse.
"If it's just a very small, thin layer usually the salt brine will take care of it. If it gets increasingly worse then we'll have to alter our plan of attack," Morton said.
If the ice proves too tough, he'll call in the bigger salt and sand trucks and plows to help drivers get a grip.
"We're prepared for whatever comes our way. We have plenty of salt and sand on hand to do what we need to get done,” Morton said.
Morton said while they are working hard to keep these roads clear, if you can, it's best to just stay off them.
"We definitely recommend you staying at home," he said.
Because the cold weather is expected to stick around, Morton said he will use a similar strategy over the next couple days to get rid of any additional ice.
