Tulsa firefighters rescued two hikers who got stuck on an icy slope at Turkey Mountain.
The hikers, a mother and daughter, went out for a brisk hike, but their problems started when they found themselves lost on the side of a steep, rocky hill.
They then lost their footing and started sliding down the hill. Kristi Beauchamp said she and her daughter latched onto tree branches to stop their fall.
"We braced ourselves on some trees and then we just couldn't see a way to go anywhere without risking going down a very steep hill," Beauchamp said.
Both above and below them was very steep and icy. Beauchamp said her daughter was able to clamber out of danger, but she was unable to find grip and follow.
"Knowing that it was cold we knew we had to act fast because otherwise we were going to be in big trouble," she said.
Tulsa firefighter Nolan Lane was part of the rescue crew. He said thankfully Beauchamp had her cell phone and called 911.
Dispatchers were able to ping the cellphone and get a rough location of where the mother and daughter were lost. A rescue team of Tulsa firefighters were sent into the woods to find them.
Lane said it was a challenge, even for them.
"Very slick, very steep rocky terrain so it was hard to get ahold of anything. It was hard to stay upright," he said.
Firefighters say if Beauchamp and her daughter had slid down further towards a steeper drop - they could have been seriously hurt.
They used ropes and straps to hoist Beauchamp and helped her and her daughter get to safety at the top of the hill.
"She was cold, but she was in good spirits and just needed a little bit of help getting out," Lane said.
The two were also hiking with their dog. The dog never fell down, but firefighters said seeing the dog pacing at the top of a hill helped them spot the hikers.
