Tulsa Health Dept. Receives Over 15,000 COVID-19 Vaccine Doses

The Tulsa Health Department received more than 15,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday and appointments have already been set for the week.

The Tulsa Health Department - and patients with Covid-19 vaccine appointments - didn't let weather stop them Monday or Tuesday. If the weather impacts travel more than it has so far, the Health Department said it has a plan to notify anyone who would be affected by any changes in the schedule.

Health Department Director Dr. Bruce Dart said in the event of ice or snow, people with appointments should check email the morning of their appointment for any changes.

"We'll make the call early in the day to determine if we continue as scheduled, or have to cancel, or have to delay," Dart said.

Monday, THD vaccinated 1,900 people with either their first or second dose, despite the icy weather. Dart said people should not be concerned about potentially missing the exact day to receive their second dose because the CDC reports a gap as long as six weeks.

"We'll work very hard to stay within the 21 or 28 day range, but we do have a window just in case of weather delays, which in winter, I think we have to plan for," Dart said.

Outside the vaccination site in the Pavilion at the Tulsa County fairgrounds, National Guard members are helping people get safely inside and back to their car.

The Tulsa Health Department was expecting 15,750 doses today from the state. Approximately 4,800 will be used for first doses, 3,100 for second doses, and 7,700 will go to other healthcare providers.

Martha King-Clark got her first dose Tuesday from Tulsa Health.

"It was perfect. It didn't hurt, everyone inside was so welcoming and wonderful, it was good experience," King-Clark said.
