Having a healthy heart is extremely important and during this "American Heart Month" Dr. Ankit Chothani, with the Oklahoma Heart Institute, says that there are several ways you can make sure you are keeping it that way.

First, try eating healthy foods like whole grains and fruits and vegetables. You will also want to limit sodium and fats like butter, gravy, and non-dairy creamers.

Next, get about 30 minutes of physical activity for at least five days a week to keep your heart healthy.

Dr. Chothani also recommends getting proper screenings from your doctor. Especially since heart disease is more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago.

"Screening involves getting a blood pressure check annually, getting at least your blood glucose levels checked every three years, getting your cholesterol checked every four or five years," said Dr. Ankit Chothani from the Oklahoma Heart Institute.

Dr. Chothani also recommends quitting smoking, making sure you are getting enough sleep and reducing stress.
