When there's ice on the roads, the Meals on Wheels service is not able to deliver food.
"The cold won't keep us from delivering, but ice will," said CEO Mark Bloomingdale.
Bloomingdale said the meal service cancels delivery in icy conditions, but they make sure they are prepared by delivering blizzard boxes months in advance.
"That's a box of seven shelf-stable meals that we deliver at the beginning of the bad weather season," he said.
The boxes contain nonperishable foods like chips and rice. Bloomingdale said this week they called to checked on their 1,500 clients to make sure they have their boxes with food to eat.
With freezing temperatures sticking around and snow in the forecast, Bloomingdale said they are looking ahead to how they will be able to deliver meals next week. He said they may have to use what's called the St. Bernard group, a group he said they haven't used in nearly four years.
"Those are all the folks who are looking for a reason to get their four wheel drives out and make those critical deliveries for us," Bloomingdale said.
Bloomingdale said during this type of weather they are also making sure clients with pets have plenty of pet food so they do not have to give their animals food they might need.
