The Tulsa Day Center said a homeless man died Thursday due to what they believe was exposure to the cold weather. They say he was in his 70's and a familiar face at the day center.
The Tulsa Day Center said the man was camping just across the street, but for whatever reason, he chose not to take shelter that was available to him. The center said it was a sad day for both area shelters and the homeless community.
"But it was a real tragedy. Of course, it's always a tragedy when we can't reach someone because he had access to night shelter if he wanted it," said Executive Director Mack Haltom.
He said someone found the man Thursday afternoon.
"Some people just choose to stay outside. I suspect there's some mental health issues that keeps people from coming inside," Haltom said.
In these temperatures, someone can get frostbite in just over two hours without protection from the elements.
"We evaluate them the best we can, try to find them a spot to get warm, stay warm, food and drink," Haltom said.
Haltom said the day center and other shelters won't turn people away and they've had workers going out to try to convince homeless people to seek shelter. Lots of groups have been handing out coats, gloves, and sleeping bags to those who choose to remain outside.
The day center said if you see a homeless person who looks to be struggling in this cold weather, don't hesitate to call 911.
