A group of college students are trying to collect enough donations to give more than 700 junior high students their own book.
The last time News On 6 introduced you to Kurt LeVan was in 2019, when he was running for Mayor of Claremore. His age has never stopped him from getting involved or from trying to create change.
"Our goal is 750 books, which is a book for every student at the Will Rogers Junior High School," said LeVan.
The project he is working on now has nothing to do with politics.
"We were really just thinking about non-controversial ways to do good for our community. We are coming out of a really contested election, dealing with the coronavirus in its current form," said LeVan. "We figured that getting books in the hands of junior high kids, we thought that there was no way to go wrong with that."
LeVan and a group of friends at Rogers State University are trying to get enough books for more than 700 junior high students – and they hope the community will help them reach their goal.
"We want either new books or gently used books just so that these kids know that people do care about them in this community. We want them to have nice books to take home and read and just expand their minds," said LeVan.
LeVan and his friends are working to find community partners and make connections that can help them make this happen for the younger kids in their community.
"All I can think about is when I was a kid, and my parents would get me new books for Christmas or my birthday and just being so excited! We are doing this, and it is probably not going to be anybody's Christmas present or birthday present, but it is going to be just a little gift for them," said RSU student Ashlyn Dunn.
If you would like to donate, you can reach out to the students on their Facebook page here or email LeVan at kurtlevan1@gmail.com.
