The Tulsa Fire Department said a battery put in the wrong area is likely what led to a fire at a Tulsa recycling center.

According to crews, the fire broke out late Thursday night at one of the main city recycling centers between Peoria and Highway 75.

Andy Little with the Tulsa fire department said the fire is under control now, but it was a big response, including seven fire engines and three ladder trucks.

Little said the fire likely happened because someone put a battery on a conveyer belt that it was not supposed to be on and it got mixed in with other recyclables.

According to Little, the fire could have been much worse had it spread to one of the other areas, and some of the firefighters had to climb onto conveyor belts to get the fire out.

"So inside the building, there is a series of conveyor belts that the recyclables travel through and along the way, they drop things in the proper areas, but when people put things that don't belong in those recyclables sometimes it can cause problems," said Little.

Currently, there is no word on if the daily operations of the plant will be disrupted because of the fire.
