Tulsa is preparing to host the Ironman triathlon for the first time over the weekend. The course reaches into three different counties and is expected to attract thousands of people.

Tulsa Regional Tourism President Ray Hoyt said Ironman will contribute $10 million to the city’s economy over the weekend. Hoyt said Tulsa’s restaurant, hotel and transportation services industries will get a boost during the event.

When planning for the event, Hoyt said it has been a team effort stretching across different counties and departments. He said Tulsa is the right place for this event because it is centrally located in the United States, the area makes for a good course and the city has hosted big events before.

Ironman is the first of four big events coming up. The 2021 KitchenAid Senior PGA Tournament, Race Massacre Centennial Commemoration and Tulsa Tough are also on the horizon.

Hoyt said the return of these events are good for the economy and he encourages people living in the city to get involved.

“It’s great to kind of rollout of the pandemic,” said Hoyt. “We always knew this would happen; I think we’re just kind of surprised because it’s here already.”

There is still a need for volunteers for Ironman and other upcoming events. More information can be found at visittulsa.com.
