Newly-Renovated Black Wall Street Memorial Unveiled

Just days ahead of the centennial of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, there is a newly renovated monument in front of the Greenwood Cultural Center.

The monument, unveiled Friday, honors the people who died, and the businesses lost during the massacre.

The monument was dedicated on the 75th anniversary of the Race Massacre, but now a fountain and eternal flame have been added. The monument lists the people who lost their lives and the businesses that were burned in 1921.

Frances Jordan-Rakestraw is the Executive Director of the Greenwood Cultural Center. She said the monument has needed repairs done for several years, but it wasn't possible before because of financial issues.

She said all of that changed last year when they received a grant from One Gas to make the renovations possible. 

"This is a very important monument and people from all over the world, country, whatever, first thing they do when they come to the greenwood cultural center is stop and take pictures here at the monument. It's very significant and has become a very important part of Tulsa," said Jordan Rakestraw.
