The Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education voted to drop the district's mask requirement in a four to one vote on Monday night.
The board based the decision on updated CDC guidelines, vaccination rates and COVID-19 data from Tulsa County.
Following the vote, some members of the board including Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist did not hesitate to take off their masks.
The district is still encouraging unvaccinated students and staff to wear a mask while they are on school property or school transportation, but it is not a requirement.
The district will keep some of its COVID-19 protocols like physical distancing, contact tracing, and air ventilation until a higher percentage of students and adults are fully vaccinated.
