EMSA has issued a medical heat alert for the Tulsa area Thursday evening.

EMSA said by 9 p.m. Thursday, medics had responded to six suspected heat-related calls. It is the first alert for the Tulsa area of 2021.

Medical Heat Alerts are issued when medics respond to five or more heat-related calls in a 24-hour period. The alert will expire when the number of calls drops below five.

EMSA offered tips to prevent heat-related illnesses. You can find them below.

  1. Pre-hydration is key in preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water/ electrolyte replacement drinks several hours prior to & during long exposure to the heat.
  2. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat if working outdoors and take plenty of shade breaks.
  3. No alcohol or caffeine.
  4. Don’t limit your time inside with air conditioning.
  5. Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors.
  6. Keep a cell phone on you at all times when outdoors, including walking, running daily errands, yard work or sports and physical activity.
