The Muscogee Nation plans to give new life to the former Cancer Treatment Centers of America facility and turn it into the tribe's largest healthcare facility.
The tribe voted unanimously to buy the 20-acre campus, which will allow them to treat hundreds of patients in Tulsa.
"Over the last several years, we've been in tremendous growth mode, and this is really going to be a natural step for us to take things to the next level," said Shawn Terry, Muscogee Nation Secretary of Health.
Terry has been eyeing the building since it closed at the beginning of the month. He said the tribe ran out of room at some of its hospitals during the pandemic, so they knew they had to expand.
"Anytime we have specialty care, whether that's in cardiology, stroke or urology, those patients oftentimes get sent to Tulsa," Terry said. “This is really going to give us a larger footprint in town."
The campus has 36 exam rooms and 153 inpatient rooms, which can also be used by patients loved ones for extended visits. Terry said they have not yet determined what services they will offer, but he said it will be similar their other hospitals.
Terry also believes the expansion could add 100 jobs by the end of the year.
"When Muskogee Nation or Muskogee Creek Nation has always been one of the most progressive tribes when it comes to healthcare. That's what we're all about, and this facility is going to be a place that our citizens and patients can be proud of," Terry added.
The tribe said it hopes to open this facility to patients as early as this summer.
