Broken Arrow Public Schools Now Hiring Bus Drivers

Broken Arrow Public Schools needs to hire 20 bus drivers as soon as possible.  They hosted a hiring event Tuesday, hoping to find some drivers.

During the previous bus driver job fair, officials said the reason for the vacancies was because of the pandemic. Now, they said they have more people retiring and they're adding additional bus routes. 

Holmes Bond went to the job fair on Tuesday because he is looking for a job closer to home. 

“Well I’ve come here this morning because I needed to transition from my trucking position to one where I had time at home consistently, because I have an ailing family. My parents are maturing in age," said Bond.

He recently retired from the trucking industry and moved from Arizona to Tulsa. Now, he's looking for a job with flexibility. 

“I love to invest in kids. I have a great grandchild and grandchildren and just love children," said Bond.

He is one of several applicants at the hiring event who already has a commercial driver's license, which is necessary for the job. 

“We do have paid training. That would take three to four weeks to get their license and then school actually starts mid-August," said Glenna Renfro, current bus driver for Broken Arrow Public Schools.

Renfro is interviewing candidates and answering questions people have about what the job involves. She said the size of the district is growing, which is why they need to hire more bus drivers. 

“Our enrollment is up from last year. Virtual students are coming back to school. So, we’re having to add routes this year," said Renfro.
