A proposal on what could lead to Oklahoma's first city-wide ban on conversion therapy for minors is moving forward in Norman.
The practice attempts to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Norman City Council did not make any decisions on the proposed ordinance Tuesday night, but after reading the first version, a vote could be coming at future meetings.
If the City approves the proposal later, a violation could cost medical professionals up to $750 or jail time up to 60 days.
The original version specifically prohibited the use of city funds for conversion therapy on minors in the LGBTQ+ community.
However, it has now been changed to an all-out ban for minors.
Back in May, city councilors listened to LGTBQ+ advocates on first-of-its-kind proposal.
"History has its eyes on us," PFLAG Norman President Michael Robertson said. "Norman again has the opportunity to be on the right side of history, to be a safe haven of hope and love."
Religious organizations and pastoral counseling would not fall under this proposed ordinance.
