The summer heat and humidity are rolling along to end the week, but some stormy weather lies ahead for part of our weekend.
We’ll have more heat stress issues today with more hot and muggy weather across Green Country. Highs will be back in the lower 90s, but heat index values will climb into the 101-103 range. Take it easy outside and take lots of breaks! We will have a steadier south breeze and some clouds rolling through too (with a stray shower not totally out of the question), but it’ll remain hot nonetheless.
Saturday will look similar to Friday, at least through mid-afternoon. We’ll start off in the 70s with a few scattered morning showers possible, mostly north of Tulsa towards the OK/KS state line. And we’ll climb back to the upper 80s and lower 90s Saturday afternoon with heat indices still near 100. But by late afternoon, strong to severe storms will start to erupt across southern Kansas as a cold front moves in.
Areas like Osage County into southeastern Kansas look to be dealing with severe storms as early as 5 PM, with activity shifting towards the Tulsa metro by 7 PM – 8 PM and continuing past sunset before shifting into southeastern Oklahoma late Saturday night. Damaging winds and flash flooding are the biggest threats, along with large hail. The tornado threat is low but not zero, especially along the OK/KS state line areas where a few storms could briefly rotate through early evening.
Storms look to be south of our area and closer to the Red River before sunrise early Sunday, though a few isolated non-severe showers or storms could pop back up during the day Sunday. The cold front responsible for Saturday’s storms will trim back the heat and humidity, with highs Sunday in the 80s and a north breeze! Monday morning also looks comfortable as lows drop back to the lower 60s. After Monday, the heat will begin to bounce back pretty quickly.
I hope you have a great Friday, Green Country! Stay safe! You can also follow me on Twitter @StephenNehrenz as well as my Facebook page Meteorologist Stephen Nehrenz to stay up to date with the very latest.
