The Tulsa City Council is expected to meet and discuss a new ordinance mandating masks for most people in the city. The proposed ordinance would require anyone who is four years and older to wear a mask while indoors.

City councilors Vanessa Hall-Harper, Lori Decter-Wright and Kara Joy McKee said they are calling the meeting because of concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and the delta variant. These councilors said they have been hearing from constituents, doctors, teachers and business owners.

The meeting comes after Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum recently said he had no plans to reinstate a citywide mask mandate.

On Friday, the Oklahoma State Department of Health reported more than 2,800 new cases of COVID-19. More than 19,000 cases are considered active.

St. Francis is expected to give a COVID-19 update ahead of the city council meeting in a 3 p.m. news conference. The city council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
