Sapulpa’s Oldest Fire Station to Undergo Major Renovations

The City of Sapulpa is preparing to renovate one of the oldest fire stations in the city. 

Station #3 near Main and East Murphy on the south side of Sapulpa is nearly half a century old. 

Sapulpa firefighters said even though they’re sad to see the current station go, they’re really excited for the new building and believe it will really help the city. 

“Basically, we’ve just outgrown this station and there’s many things wrong with it,” said Sapulpa Fire Chief David Taylor. 

Taylor said the current building was built by Sapulpa Firefighters in the 70’s and now their trucks barely fit inside.

“The trucks have grown in size so it’s just hard getting them in and out of here,” said Taylor. 

Chief Taylor said right now the station only has one bathroom, and the living quarters are very small. He also said the current layout makes it difficult for trucks to get in and out of the station. 

The building will sit at an angle on the new lot, which helps cut down on response items because the trucks will be able to get in and out easier. 

“The guys will be able to actually circle around and drive through the back instead of backing in the station,” said Taylor. 

Sapulpa voters passed several bond issues as part of the 2020 GoBond geared toward major renovation projects in the city like Fire Station Number 3.   

Vice Mayor Carla Gunn said the city has experienced some major growth over the past few years and they’re excited for what’s ahead. 

“It’s exciting to start having some attention and start seeing some changes,” said Vice Mayor Carla Gunn. “We’re all working diligently together to start bringing people to Sapulpa. It’s a great place to live.” 

The new station will also have a gym, a fire pole and will be the only two-story station in the city. 

They’re also looking to salvage some parts of the old station to save a piece of history. 

“We’ve tried to keep it up, we’ve tried to maintain it,” said Taylor. “But it’s just time and we’re fortunate enough to have had voters pass that bond and we get to rebuild it.” 

While the building is under construction, firefighters from station number 3 will be operating out of their central location. 

The station is being designed by Greg Helms and Associates out of Jenks and is expected to take about 12 to 14 months to complete.
