The public will soon have the chance to give their input on Union Public Schools' new mascot. It comes after the Union Board of Education voted unanimously to remove its "Redskins" mascot and logo.

Union Public Schools has had the "Redskins" mascot for 75 years and people in the community have been trying to get it changed for several years.

In 2020 the Union Board of Education voted to remove the mascot and logo. And now, the public is getting the chance to give their input on a new mascot.

School officials say they want a mascot that represents the district's values. They also want to keep the school's red and black color scheme.

A 23 member committee went through a mascot nomination process and from that they had more than 320 entries.

The committee then narrowed it down to the two top choices.

The district will announce the top choices next week and the public will have the chance to weigh in on them and share their thoughts.

From there, the district will develop logos and designs and students will cast the final decision between the two.
