Crews from the Humane Society of Tulsa have already been to Louisiana and back after helping evacuate shelter animals ahead of Hurricane Ida. They say it is a relief to be able to do Something Good, in the midst of the storm.
"Part of being from Oklahoma is we experience all kinds of natural disasters so when we have an opportunity to help others- we jump on it because you never know when you are the one who is going to need help," said Evan Fadem with The Humane Society of Tulsa in a Facebook Live from Louisianna.
The dogs in this Facebook Live video are just a few dozen of 86 dogs and 41 cats- Humane Society of Tulsa crews evacuated from shelters across Louisiana ahead of Hurricane Ida.
These evacuations are crucial for several reasons. They say having a clear shelter allows volunteers to focus on their own families and safety. Then once the storm passes, the shelter will have room for animals separated from their owners in the chaos.
"When we go into these situations, we are picking up the animals who have been in the shelters prior to the storm hitting. These are all animals who have filled their stray-hold or were owner surrenders so we are not taking any pets who could potentially have an owner," said Evan.
The crew went into Louisiana, expecting to help four parishes- they ended up helping 5.
"A lot of these are small municipal, rural shelters- shelters that are not built to be able to withstand a storm like that," said Evan, "We can't not help, that is part of what we do."
The animals were brought back to safety in Tulsa and then will be heading to Virginia to find their forever homes.
"For us, it is always about doing Something Good and being able to help the animals- which in turn helps the people," said Evan.
If you would like to help the Humane Society of Tulsa care for the animals recently evacuated from Louisiana and any others who come through their door.
