Oklahoma Congressman Markwayne Mullin's office says he is safe after word spread of him trying to get into Afghanistan.

The Washington Post reports Congressman Mullin contacted the U.S. ambassador to Tajikistan saying he needed help transporting a large amount of cash into the country because he wanted to rescue five Americans who were stuck in Afghanistan.

According to the Washington Post, Mullin planned to hire a helicopter to fly in and needed the top diplomat's help.

The Washington Post story says that Embassy officials told Mullin they could not help him skirt the laws on cash limits. It says Mullin got upset and threatened the U.S. ambassador and embassy staff.

The Washington Post said this is the second time Mullin has tried to travel to Afghanistan for an unauthorized evacuation.

Mullin's office did not confirm the Washington Post story or if Mullin is even out of the country.

His office released a statement saying:

“Congressman Mullin has been and is currently completely safe. He and the Office of Oklahoma’s Second District will continue to do anything in our power to bring home all Americans from the war zone that President Biden abandoned. The safety and security of the American people will always be his top priority. We have no further comment at this time.”

The White House says the State Department will continue to work to get Americans out of Afghanistan.
