A pleasant morning, mostly in the 60s will quickly yield high temps in the mid to upper 90s today with gusty south to southwest winds from 15 to 25 mph. The lack of significant low-level moisture will result in no appreciable heat index values for the next few days even though daytime highs will reach well into the upper 90s, nearing 100 tomorrow. Temperatures will gradually drop back down into the mid to lower 90s early next week before a front nears the state Tuesday night into Wednesday.
The main issue for the next few days will be increasing heat and the potential for increasing fire spread rates across the state. The lack of widespread precipitation and the combination of low relative humidity, gusty southwest winds and hot temps will support wildfire growth and spread. While this may occur today and Sunday, the higher likelihood from an environmental weather outlook will be Saturday. Please exercise caution for the next few days, especially Saturday afternoon as conditions will be maximized.
The mid-level ridge located across the Rockies will expand eastward this weekend before flattening and weakening early next week as stronger westerlies aloft gently buckle allowing several waves to move across the central plains. A surface front should be moving southward into the central plains and may enter northern OK late Tuesday night into Wednesday. The southern stream may also support a quasi-tropical-surface low development that could bring some increasing rain and thunder across part of NE TX or extreme SE OK Tuesday. The combination of these features will bring some increasing thunder probabilities, mostly low for this forecast package, to part of southern Kansas and northeastern OK Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. We’ll continue with mostly conservative probabilities for this forecast update, but higher chances will be possible if data continues to support the arrival of this system.
Thanks for reading the Friday morning weather discussion and blog.
Have a super great day!
