Jenks High School Students Place Nearly 3,000 Flags In Remembrance Of 9/11 Victims

On Friday students in Jenks placed 2,997 American Flags in front of the high school in honor of every person killed on September 11th, 2001.

Students say organizing this ceremony is their way of making sure the tragedy that happened 20 years ago, is never forgotten. Friday we say, "May We Never Forget," but if you were alive on September 11th, 2001, forgetting the horrors and heaviness of that day can feel impossible.

Most remember exactly where we were when the first plane hit the World Trade Center 20 years ago. Teenagers do not have memories of 9/11 because they hadn't been born yet- all they know is the history we tell them. Some of those students are at Jenks High School.

"When I started to get older and understand the importance it really struck me deep. I want my generation especially those who weren't even alive during this to really remember this and honor it," said 15-year-old Isabella Suttee.

They spent the morning placing nearly three thousand American Flags in the ground outside their school- in memory of every life lost in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

They heard from a man who was inside one of the towers on 9/11.

"I was ready to head back up the stairs. until that voice on the inside which I believe was God speaking to me," said Tim Veldstra, Tower 2 Survivor.

He survived the attack and now lives in Green Country- sharing his story with others.

"These kids weren't alive yet, but they want to show their patriotism and that is why I was willing to accept the invitation to come here- I thought it was awesome," said Veldstra.

The flags were removed at the end of the school day but there is no doubt these students will have the memory of more than two thousand flags waving in the wind- with them as they move forward.
